Thinking of you, your sweet and special Toni and the whole family. We are praying for peace during this very difficult time. Love you Doane family! Please let us know if there is anything we can do. "Words can not adequately explain the sadness I and all Phil's racquetball friends feel about his passing. I met Phil some 25 years ago and was immediately impressed by his sense of humor and generosity. My wife Carolyn, son Nikolas and I were fortunate to share dinners with Toni, Blair and Phil and be invited to watch the annual Newport Harbor Christmas Cruise with the family. Over the years we shared many conversations about our families, Phil took great interest in the lives of Brad, Tim and Blair, his grandchildren and the love of his life Toni. Uncle Phil was admired by all that were fortunate to know him and will be missed but never forgotten."

"Phil, it deepens me sadly to see you go so soon. I am truly sorry that I missed my opportunity to see you face to face a week before you passed. Life should never get that busy where we can't carve out time for the people we care about. I shared some words with Tim to pass onto you but I would like to say a little more.
You were always there for me when we were young. I have fond memories of you cheering us on during every flag football, soccer, basketball and baseball season. You were the FUN DAD and young at heart. Just wanting to play with us and have a good time. I think that many of us, as we get older, can learn from your youthful spirit and let that little kid in us get out more often.
As we grew older and the summers rolled on our paths would cross again with family trips to Moonestone. You could always be found on the stern of someone's boat having a cocktail in one hand and a smile on your face. Usually you were goofing around telling jokes or lending a helping hand out to a captain in need. Always willing to help others. That is the Phil I will always remember.
When Tim and I were not body surfing or skateboarding, we would playing basketball in the back alley behind the Doane's house. Do you remember the low basketball hoop? We would run in and out of the house bothering Toni for water and snacks constantly.
You would be in your office nook near the back of the kitchen with stacks of paper everywhere. Whenever we needed an extra person to play ball you would step in. It took no time at all for you to go from office nook to back alley basketball. Throwing elbows, boxing out players, crashing the boards. Just having fun with boys. That is the Phil I know and love.
As I grew older and took trips to Catalina without my dad. I always felt the comfort of knowing that you were there if anything were to go wrong you were my "Beacon of Hope".
I just wanted you know how much I appreciate your friendship, generosity and humor over the years. Never a dull moment, always smiling , joking, living life to the fullest. Your a class act Phil! You are sorely missed."
- Eric Wren

"Aloha oi... from across the 2500 miles of the deep bue Pacific... we have cast plumeria and orchid flowers on the water off Waikiki... for you dear Skipper Phil. And a doubke measure of blosdoms so as to send some to First Mate Toni also .
You were the first Marinero skipper. -and likely the most enthusiastic -to join up and support our effort to conserve sea critters . We teamed together under the banner of the CCD , the Catalina Conservancy Divers. That was a noble effort which helped enlighten others about people's role in preserving our precious sea life.
We couldn't have done it very well without you.

"Coming to Balboa with Eva and Jim was always special for us. Sometimes in the earlier years Uncle Chuck took us out on his boat Hukilau and later Phil on his boat Unreel even all the way to Catalina. Going out we travelled with the dolphins. The other day we would just walk across to the beach for a swim in the Pacific. Many times we cruised the bay with Water Lily watching all the beautiful boats and homes. Dinner at the Yacht Club or watching the Boat Parade at his house before Christmas, these are just unforgettable moments in our life. But the best about all of this was being with Phil. I miss his humour, friendliness and affection. Every moment and for a long time."

"I met Phil and Blair Spring 1999 as they were doing sales calls to promote Blair's new business through Safeguard. I managed a civil engineering firm in Irvine and as they walked in the front door I quickly saw behind the friendly facade the kind and knowledgeable man that Phil presented. Four years pass and I am now working for Amtex in the Marine canvas business and in walks Phil to order some covers. What a nice surprise and every year thereafter I got to see and visit with him which was always a pleasure. I saw Phil earlier this year and knew he was ill, but this picture of him is the way I will remember Uncle Phil and completely agree with him that there is nothing a visit to Catalina won't cure."

There are no words to express how much you mean to me. I will miss you always, but remember you FOREVER. Thank you for being a great friend, mentor, listener, and the GREATEST Captain these seas has ever seen. Thank you for your kind words of encouragement and for making my dream come true, diving with my sons. I will never forget that weekend.
