Phil passed away peacefully on May 8th 2017 at his bayside home in Newport Beach, CA at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife Toni Burroughs Doane and sons Timothy Schuyler Doane, Bradley Philip Doane, and Blair Benjamin Doane, and grandsons Carson Philip Doane and Logan Philip Doane.
Phil was born and raised in San Marino and graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1953. A descendant of Revolutionary War legend General Philip Schuyler, Phil also served in the Army in Korea. After an honorable discharge, Phil returned to Orange County where he graduated from Orange Coast College. Soon after he started his own business as a distributor of Safeguard Business Systems, a business he ran for over 50 years.
The “Captain” or “Commodore” was a lifelong mariner and fisherman who owned and sailed several boats out of Newport Harbor, most notably his sportfisher Hukilau and his father’s wooden bay boat Water Lily. He was a proud member of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club for over 55 years. As a member he raced his Cal 29 Serena and won many races over the years with good friends and fellow members of NHYC.
As his family and desire to explore the Channel Islands grew, he purchased a Cal 2-46 ketch and lovingly named it Antonia after his wife Toni. Aboard Antonia, Phil took his family and friends exploring the islands for many wonderful years. When his sons became interested in diving and fishing, he transitioned to a Pacifica 41 named Unreel. It was aboard her that Phil began a long and enjoyable relationship as an early member and supporter of the Catalina Island Conservancy and the Catalina Conservancy Divers. Phil regularly donated his time diving and his boat to support research diving trips.
Phil’s love of diving began back when his young son Brad wanted to get certified as a diver and needed an adult “buddy” to dive with. They were certified together in 1983 and Tim and Blair followed soon after. With his family and friends, Phil traveled worldwide on many diving adventures from the Red Sea to Australia.
He also loved to ski and would take his family and friends on ski trips every year to mountains in California, Utah, and Colorado. His other great passion was playing racquetball, something he did with good friends for decades.
An ever-smiling and always friendly “Uncle Phil” was often found surrounded by family and friends at his family’s bayside home on the Balboa Peninsula or aboard his boats in Moonstone Cove.
He will be greatly missed by many…
